Fall Activities Update

We had a tremendously successful Open House on September 10th.  A total of 304 people registered for one or more of our classes. This number includes 45 newcomers to our SWC – welcome. We wish all a very pleasant, fun  and active semester .

Many thanks to all office and other volunteers who made the event such a success.

At the eleventh hour we are delighted to announce we have obtained the services of a replacement teacher for Computers Level 2. Our new recruit is William Thomson. William has considerable experience in teaching computers, including to seniors. We welcome William to our roster of volunteer instructors. The Computer Level 2 class will be held on Monday from 2:30 to 3:45 in the Upper Room.

After some required last minute changes, we now have available for participants’ use the final versions of the Registration and Waiver  forms. Click on the links shown to view and print. You may fill out these forms prior to Open House and bring with you to complete the registration process on Weds Sept 10th at the Wall Street United Church, 9:30 to noon.

Class start dates are at the discretion of the class leader. These are not all finalized yet. However, no classes will start prior to the week of September 15th.

Would like to acknowledge here how we will miss our regular Mid-Eastern Dance and Computer Level 2 classes. Instructors Karen McNaull and Keith Wood are currently indisposed. We wish both a speedy return to full health and to seeing them back in action at SWC again soon.

Pleased to announce we have now completed the schedule of activities for the September to December 2014 semester.  To access click Schedule.  The corresponding description of the activities on offer is available: Descriptions.

Some of the notable changes from the earlier preliminary versions of these documents are: Astronomy is back under the leadership of John Beckstead, thanks John; Cycling has had to be cancelled due to a family illness.

As always, we are extremely grateful to our class leaders who give so generously of their time and talents to provide such a wide range of instructive and interesting activities all for the benefit of our area seniors. We are delighted to welcome Elizabeth Stratton, Conversational Spanish Part I and Eileen Ling, Gentle Mobility Exercise, to the roster of our dedicated instructors.

We have almost completed putting together the roster with description of activities for the Fall, Sept to Dec 2014, semester. In addition, we have completed the preliminary schedule for these activities.

We are exploring the possibility of adding a couple of other programmes. Also, at time of publishing, we believe the dates on the schedule are firm. However, there is always the possibility of some further changes, which is why we have designated the schedule as preliminary.  So please stay tuned for further updates.

With regard to start dates: these are at the discretion of the class leader. However, no classes will start before the week of September 15th. Once confirmed, these dates will be made known. In many cases, leaders will have that information at Open House on September 10th.

Cycling and Walking

Over the summer, several SWC participants enjoyed varying levels of cycling and walking together.  Kay Carlson was so inspired by some of the exercise class participant’s concern that they weren’t going to get the same level of activity once the exercise classes ended that they decided to experiment with cycling and walking during the Summer.  It went so well that the same activities are going to be offered this Fall.

Gentle Mobility Exercise

We’re delighted to welcome back Eileen Ling, who will lead a new activity geared towards seniors with limited mobility.

Spanish Classes

We are very pleased to announce that Elizabeth Stratton has offered to join our team of volunteer instructors and teach Spanish this semester!  Thank you Elizabeth.

Bridge Euchre and Games

Since the number of participants in the Thursday afternoon Bridge, Euchre and Games  dwindled to a few last Spring, the SWC Board  needs to hear from participants if they wish to continue in the Fall.  Please send an email to the office or leave a message on the SWC office phone to voice your desire regarding this matter (swcadmin@myhighspeed.ca or 613-345-2412).

Astronomy will not be available this semester.
